Returning to work after lockdown
The pandemic has shown your workforce to be resilient and adaptable, but have you considered how people could be affected as they prepare to return to the workplace? What additional challenges will that process of return present?
The pandemic impacted everyone in different ways. We have all experienced some degree of difficulty over the past year. This may have stemmed from the devastation that can be caused by the loss of a loved one, or from the cumulation of a number of comparatively minor events such as missing friends and family, being unable to socialise or from experiencing the stresses of home schooling. The pandemic brought with it positive experiences too, spending more time with those we live with, perhaps a slower pace of life, or more time to explore hobbies or engage in exercise.
For many of us, for many different reasons, life is different now. We have all adapted to a new normal and as we come out of lockdown we will need to adapt again. The existing support mechanisms that your organisation has in place may not be designed to help with this process of adaptation. For people to innovate, trust, respect, listen and to perform at their best they need to feel psychologically and physically safe.
When we are faced with uncertainty, we can be forced into operating from the survival areas of our brain. This can reduce our cognitive capacity, affecting our decision making and our ability to plan. Over time, this can affect our performance longer term, and in some instances can lead to counter productive workplace behaviour including insider threat. If ever there was a time to understand how context drives how safe we feel, it is surely now.
Watch our discussion on Managing return to work risk
Join tiller experts behavioural scientist Anna Leslie and risk and resilience expert Philip Stewart present an insightful session on how businesses can support leadership, teams and individuals as they re-adjust to new working patterns in a post COVID world.
You will learn:
· How uncertainty decreases our sense of safety;
· How our brains react to feeling unsafe, and how this affects our work performance;
· Why this can lead to poor productivity, counter productive workplace behaviour, insider threat and employee drift
Why does this matter?
Stress can force us into operating the survival areas of our brain. This can reduce our cognitive capacity, negatively affecting decision making, our ability to plan and our performance. As a species, we do not cope well with change, especially that which is beyond our control. Research shows that negative experiences during periods of change can affect performance long term, and in some instances, can lead to insider threats.
How can we help?
Our team of specialist behavioural scientists have used cutting edge scientific research from neuroscience and clinical psychology to develop workshop-based training that delivers a trauma-informed approach to understanding the performance and wellbeing of your staff in a post COVID environment.
In a workshop setting with business and HR leaders we take a temperature check of your organisation, understanding existing norms, systems and processes. We then offer bespoke advice on how to leverage these to maximise well being of staff returning post COVID using industry best practice.
We leave you with a bespoke report and toolbox for your organisation, outlining the key techniques necessary to promote resilience across your company.
Into the future we can train and support key teams and leaders in these techniques, and/or speak directly to your workforce, equipping them with a basic understanding of the trauma- informed approach, enabling them to better understand their own responses and empowering them to heal and grow, optimising their work performance.
This will:
• Help your staff manage their own resilience, reducing the risk of stress and anxiety, improving team cohesion, group decision making and task performance.
• Equip business leaders and HR teams with the assessment and intervention tools necessary to better understand triggers, fears or anxieties that your staff may face.
• Fast track your company’s return to optimum performance and productivity.
